House training a dog is a very stressful process for many pet owners. They know that it is something which must be done, but they are not always certain how they should go about the situation. After all, we all want our homes to be free of unsightly stains and smells, but getting this point through to the dog is no simple task.

Fortunately, if you are in the process of house training a dog, there are few simple pointers you can follow that will make life a great deal easier on you and your four-legged companion. Stick to these tips, and you won't have too much to worry about.

Puppies go quite often - Know that puppies will need to go to the bathroom quite frequently - perhaps six or more times a day. When house training a dog, this fact becomes very important. You are either going to have to be willing to make frequent trips outdoors with them, or confine them to a relatively small and easy area to clean is the "appropriate" bathroom spot. You must do at least one or both of these things in order to familiarize your dog with the correct place to eliminate.

Be stern with them - Secondly, sternly scold the bad behavior. This may sound like a no-brainer, but people frequently make errors in this area of house training a dog. For one thing, when it comes to accidents, many people will wait far too long to scold the puppy. You must catch them in the act. Canines lack the ability to reason the way humans do, so they aren't going to connect the scolding with the current stain on the carpet with the act of they created twenty minutes ago. As a result, they will simply understand that you are mad about the mess, not that you are mad about the dog making the mess.

Be sure to reward good behavior - On the flip-side of house training a dog, reward good behavior. Most people will do this the first few times the puppy performs well, but they soon become lax in rewarding the correct behavior. This is a critical mistake. Dogs respond very well to positive reinforcement. If you continually praise them for going to the bathroom in the correct area, they will continue to do so just so you will be pleased with them.

By following these three very simple steps, you will find that house training a dog has become much easier. In truth, it really can be as simple as it sounds.
